21st October 2006
Windsurfing: Overcombe Wind Direction: SSW Wind Stength: F4-6 Surf / Sea State: Some waves, going flatter as t Air Temperature: 17C - for October! Sea Temperature: still good. Weather: Sunny Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Well, I was pretty unenthusiastic about setting off anywhere with the dire
prognostications of traffic over the UK (for those not in the know,
Fri/Sat, Oct 20/21, were statistically likely to be the busiest days of the
year on the countries roads).
A couple of phone calls failed to establish any concensus, with Nigel
opting for Daymer & Tony opting to pootle about the house. I knew Adrian
was planning to go to Overcombe, so that settled it.
As it was, the traffic - although heavy - was moving well the whole way &
it only took me 2 1/4 hrs to get to Overcombe, arriving just after midday.
Adrian was already there. I was even able to find 2 parking spaces for car
+ trailer & trailer eventually ended up on the beach front.
Weather was sunny, and blowing a good F5, but pretty gusty. Almost exactly
cross-shore. Some nice waves at low tide, too.
So - out with the 86L Goya wave, and 1st snag: Air vent screw seized so
couldn't shut it. Fixed with Vaseline.
2nd snag: Snapped downhaul whilst cranking-on the tension. No problem,
measured out a length of my spare rope, cut it, spent ages with a lighter
trying to seal the ends, then to discover the rope's diameter was too great
to pass through the hole in my mastfoot. Up to the shop for a new length of
skinnier rope, only to find they have no hot knife - so repeated the
exercise with the lighter.
3rd snag: No harness lines on boom. I'd removed them to take to Fuerte with
me, and not replaced them since returning. Dug them out of the trailer &
fitted. Upside-down, as it transpired. Sod it: I thought: the highly
under-utilised uphaul would just have to come out from (what is now) the
top of the boom.
4th snag: No spreader bar on my harness. I'd also taken that off to make
the harness fit in my case coming back from Fuerte. Luckily, it was also in
my kit bag.
5th snag: More of a concern really - the sort of concern that makes you
feel like a complete novice & wally, whilst seemingly everyone around you
is pulling off back loops, spocks, switch-stance gybes, and all maner of
other impossible manouvers.
So.... several tides later & I was ready to do battle with 5.5m.
Unfortunately, the tide had started to push in by now, so the waves were
far less evident.
It certainly was gusty - seemingly very little wind to get off the beach, &
then often overpowered on the outside. That said, I seemed to survive all
my gybes in the 1st hour or so. Less successful was the waveriding: There
just never seemed to be any around when I wanted them! I spent some time
hanging around, waiting for the waves, catching them, & then have them
peter out long before they became anything worthwhile.
A good day, and certainly worth the trip after my initial doubts.
Good to see Spencer there & a whole bunch of other folk from Bristol who
I've not seen for ages.
Just checked my own records - this was my 1st trip to Overcombe in 2 years.
